I am a non-representational abstract painter, with a strong focus on colour relationships and texture. My paintings are about life experiences and ideas about art. My paintings are an expression of colour and they are associated with emotional connections. I am inspired by Cy Twombly, William de Kooning, and Aida Tomescu. My project has developed from an interest in symbolic representation to a purely non-representational approach. This has allowed me to explore the conceptual meaning of colour theory and the intersection of emotion and rational thought. I use acrylic paint on canvas and experiment with applying the paint in varied ways with brushes, squeegees, rags and palette knives. I am also fascinated with the texture of the paint, adding calcium carbonate, wood shavings and sand to change the viscosity of the paint and the surface qualities. For each painting, I experiment with colour to create a harmonious palette. These paintings allow the viewer to experience exaggerated gestural brushstrokes through wash of colour and gain an overall sense of balance and harmony. I believe that abstract painting should not necessarily have any story to tell. In this way sometimes the viewer finds what the painting is about.

Original photo was shown in a 1970 Life magazine as a part of their photography competition. There were many wonderful photographs featured, but I loved this particular photo, taken by a free-lance photographer Lou de la Torre at a coffee house in San Francisco. I did a drawing of it back in the ?70?s, but gave it away, so this year I painted it. The photo is black and white, so I did sepia tones with a light wash, and on the advice of my former art teacher, Kathy Rivera, add a pop of red.

I started my art journey in May 2025 with Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils. I experimented with different surfaces, then decided I'd like to try Faber-Castell Pitt pastel pencils. This drawing of a pied cormorant, 'Quiet Sentinel ', was my third pastel artwork. I entered it into The Ravenswood Women's Art Prize 2026. It didn't get selected but the learning experience has been invaluable. I've heard it said that it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. My journey so far

"Underwater Garden" is a large acrylic painting on 122 x 76cm canvas of two sea turtles - George and Emmie. These two sea turtles have featured in some of my other works as well, most notably on their own individual surfboard paintings. "Underwater Garden" pays homage to the relationship between my Nanna Emmie and her first husband George. My Nanna has played a pivotal role throughout my life and I am still mourning her loss in 2022. I never got to meet George as he had passed before I was b

I loved this photograph from John Strachan photography and finally got around to painting it in acrylic. I tried to be quite loose with the painting as there was so much detail. in the end I thought the sky looked a bit bare so with the help of Chat GPT I added seagulls to the photo and was then able to paint them into my art work. This painting will be heading for the Aberdeen art show the end of August for sale.
